Happy Lunar New Year, everyone! It is the year of the Fire Monkey as of Monday, and to celebrate and bring yourself good fortune, have some leafy greens. Mary Kate has Chinese heritage (I’m a year of the snake — also a fire year). Given the predictions for below freezing temperatures this weekend, we need some fire.
In order to celebrate fire, as well as President’s Day, we are frying on Monday — it’s the best way to spend a holiday. Not sure what’s on the menu other than onion rings (always), but it will be good. In honor of frying and science, here’s a write-up on a food study (that does not appear to be accessible free) showing that frying, like many methods of cooking, may unlock certain beneficial compounds in food. Now, we did not need a scientific excuse to fry; we fry because it tastes good and if we want it, we have to make it. But it seems to me that this may be an argument for “all things in moderation,” right?
This has only a little to do with food (some of the people are eating?), but this interactive tour of Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights is amazing. Art history nerdery combined with technology — and plenty of medieval debauchery.
If you’re looking for things to do this weekend and you’re local, the NH Orchid Society’s 25th Annual Show might be something to check out.
For those of you who use bentonite clay for toothpaste or to use to detox from allergic reactions, check what brand you are using. The FDA has said there are elevated levels of lead in Alikay Naturals – Bentonite Me Baby – Bentonite Clay, and that there is a lead poisoning risk. I (Denise) hate seeing this kind of thing because I’m already totally paranoid and suspicious of any manufacturing process. Sigh.
Have a good weekend everyone!
